March Madness bracket names: 50 ideas

Fifty March Madness bracket and pool names, from clean office-safe puns to funny busted-bracket confessions. Plus how to pick one your whole pool will use.

A good March Madness bracket name is short, clearly about the pool, and still funny on a leaderboard in week three. Name the pool first, because everyone sees that, then let each person name their own bracket. Fifty names are below, in five groups, and the last section explains how to choose one your whole office will actually use.

What are good names for the pool itself?

The pool name is the title on the invite, so it should be clear and a little proud.

  1. The Big Dance Committee
  2. Bracket Busters
  3. Cinderella Story Club
  4. Buzzer Beaters Anonymous
  5. Chalk Talk
  6. Upset Alert

  8. Three Weeks of Chaos
  9. The Bracketology Society
  10. Sweet Sixteen Shades of Gray

  12. One Shining Moment League
  13. Selection Sunday Social Club

What are funny March Madness bracket names?

Names that admit defeat early are the funniest. Each of these suits one person, so hand them out carefully.

  4. Chalk Is Boring but I Picked It
  5. I Watched One Game This Year

How do you pick a name your pool will use?

Five tests, in order:

  1. Can you read it out loud in under three seconds? A long name gets abbreviated, and the abbreviation is never the funny part.
  2. Does it still make sense in week three? A name about round one is stale when the Sweet Sixteen arrives.
  3. Would you say it in a meeting? If not, leave it out.
  4. Does it avoid money? A pool is a game, so keep the name about the basketball and the people.
  5. Does anyone else already use it? If a quick search finds your joke on a thousand mugs, write a new one.

The strongest names come from inside the group: a nickname, a running joke, a street. A name nobody outside the office would get is usually the one the office likes best.

How do you come up with your own?

Most good names come from one of four moves, so steal the move and not the joke.

  • Twist a basketball term. Take a phrase like buzzer beater, full-court press or Sweet Sixteen and bend it toward your office. Buzzer Beaters Anonymous is one move away from a name nobody else has.
  • Confess something. Admit a bad habit up front: picking by mascot, by color, by whichever school you have heard of. It disarms the people who would have said it for you.
  • Name the rivalry. Floors, departments and offices already compete for the good parking. Put that in the title.
  • Use an inside joke. A running gag, a former colleague, a meeting that never ends. Outsiders will not get it, which is the point.

Write ten bad ones before you write a good one. Then read the shortlist out loud to someone who was not in the room.

Where do you put the name once you have it?

Wherever your members will see it first. On Fanzava, you name the pool when you set up your hub, along with your logo and colors, so the title on the invite and the leaderboard is yours and not ours. Paid plans ship full white label, so nothing on screen says Fanzava unless you want it to. Brackets start on Starter, and a one-time Bracket Pass covers a single tournament.

Our team builds the bracket from the tournament’s own draw and records each result, so once the name is on the invite, your job is to make sure people fill it out before the first tip. See March Madness bracket pool software for the whole flow, or the bracket challenge for business if you are running it for staff or customers, and our guide to running a March Madness pool for the rules to settle before you send the link. If you are looking for more than a name, there are plenty of office bracket ideas beyond March.

Frequently asked questions

What are good March Madness bracket names?

The best ones are short, say something about the person or the pool, and still make sense on a leaderboard in week three. A basketball pun works, and a confession about your own picks works better.

What are funny March Madness bracket pool names?

Names that admit defeat early are the funniest, like Busted by Thursday or Picked Based on Mascots. Names that call out the office, like The Finance Team Never Wins, work if the group can take it.

Should the pool name be different from a bracket name?

Yes. The pool name is the title everyone sees, so make it clear and a little proud. A bracket name belongs to one person, so let each person write their own.

Can I use March Madness in my pool name?

March Madness is the NCAA's name for its tournament. Using it to describe a private office pool is ordinary. If your pool is public or promotes a business, check the NCAA's rules, or name the pool after your own team, office or street instead.

What should I avoid in a pool name?

Anything about money, anything that could embarrass a colleague, and anything that would not make sense on a screen in front of the whole company. Keep it to something you would say in a meeting.
