AFL tipping

Twenty-four rounds, eighteen clubs, and one leaderboard your audience checks every Monday.

An AFL tipping competition that runs itself from the first bounce in March to the Grand Final in October. Fixtures arrive on their own, tips lock at each bounce, and the ladder updates before the post-match is over. Your logo, your colours, your domain.

The 2027 AFL season, at a glance.

Clubs
18, playing a nine-game round when everyone is available.
Home and away
24 rounds. Round 1 runs Wednesday 17 or Thursday 18 March through Sunday 21 March, and the season closes on Sunday 30 August.
Opening Round is gone
Scrapped after three seasons. All 18 clubs return to a traditional Round 1, so there is no longer a fortnight where most of the competition sits out.
Byes
18 clubs across 24 rounds means every club has a bye, and a run of rounds carries fewer than nine matches.
Gather Round
Thursday 8 to Sunday 11 April, every match played in South Australia.
Finals
Five weeks and ten teams since 2026, up from eight. Wildcard week opens with 7th v 10th and 8th v 9th while the top six rest. Eleven finals in total, up from nine.
Grand Final
Saturday 2 October 2027 at the MCG, the first October Grand Final since 2016.
Round window
Thursday night to Sunday twilight, spread across every mainland time zone, with fixtures locking one at a time.

What a round looks like once it's running.

  1. Thursday's fixtures appear without you touching anything.

Every match in the round lands in your hub from the live data feed, with teams, bounce times and lock countdowns already attached. Bye rounds come through with the correct number of matches, so nobody is tipping a game that isn't on.

  2. Tips come in, fixture by fixture.

Your audience picks a winner in each match and nominates a Joker if you've enabled one. Reminders go out 24 hours before the Thursday night lock and again 75 minutes before, which is the difference between a full field and a field with twelve people who forgot.

  3. Sunday night scores itself.

Results arrive as each match ends. The ladder moves in real time, overall and inside every group. On Monday morning everyone gets their score, their rank and their group position, and the argument restarts on its own.

The arguments every AFL tipping organiser has.

Australian rules has a structural quirk no other code on this list shares: the number of matches in a round changes. Most scoring problems in an AFL competition trace back to that.

Bye rounds break naive scoring.

With 18 clubs and 24 rounds, plenty of rounds carry six or seven matches instead of nine. Under flat points-per-tip, a perfect six-game round is worth less than a middling nine-game one, and anyone who joins during the byes starts from a shallower hole than the people who have been playing since March. Either weight rounds by fixture count, or accept the distortion deliberately rather than by accident.

Margin tips have to survive the byes too.

Margin prediction runs on one designated fixture per round and settles the season when two people finish level on points. In a six-game round there are fewer sensible fixtures to designate, and the designated match is more likely to be a blowout. Pick the margin fixture on competitiveness, not on the timeslot.

The Wildcard round changes where your season ends.

Since 2026 the finals run five weeks and ten teams, with the 5th and 6th placed sides not knowing their opponent until both Wildcard results are in. Decide before Round 1 whether your competition stops at Round 24, tips through all five weeks of finals, or closes tipping and runs a four-team bracket once the preliminary finals are set. Changing it in August is how organisers lose people.

Thursday night is where competitions are lost.

One match, midweek, usually before anyone has looked at the team sheets. Locks are per fixture rather than per round, so a late Thursday tip is impossible and a late Sunday tip is fine. Set your late-tip policy now: auto-assign to the favourite, score zero, or don't count the fixture.

Perfect rounds are rarer than people think, and worth paying for.

Nine from nine happens a handful of times a season across a whole field. A perfect round bonus costs you almost nothing in points inflation and buys a genuine moment. Configure the value per competition, or leave it off.

Formats that suit a 24-round season.

Season-long head to head

A winner in every match, every round, March to August. The default, and the right call for a mixed audience where most people just want a reason to check in on Monday.

Margin tipping

Predict the winning margin, not just the winner. Australian rules scores run wide enough that margin genuinely separates the people who watch from the people who guess.

Survivor

One club a round, never twice, one wrong call and you're out. With 18 clubs and 24 rounds, nobody survives to the end, which is the point.

Final four bracket

The preliminary finals and the grand final are a true four-team knockout. Tip the earlier weeks, then ask our team for a bracket once the preliminary finals are set.

Why run your AFL tipping on Fanzava.

Your brand, not ours.

Your logo, your colours, your domain on every screen and every email. Pro and above run on a custom domain with a custom email sender, so the Monday recap arrives from you and nobody sees a Fanzava logo at any point.

Bye rounds handled, not worked around.

Fixtures come from the live data feed, so a seven-game round is a seven-game round. No phantom matches, no manual editing on a Tuesday, no spreadsheet formula that collapses the first time a club has a week off.

Groups, rivalries and a Banter Board.

Split your audience into groups by department, branch, suburb or supporter club. Group leaderboards run alongside the overall one, and the Banter Board gives the trash talk somewhere to live that isn't your inbox.

Sponsors get something worth their logo.

Sponsor placements appear on the leaderboard, in round result emails and in the weekly recap. Prize categories are configurable and can be funded by sponsors, so what people are playing for is visible from Round 1.

Questions AFL organisers ask.

Do fixtures and results come in automatically?
Yes. Australian rules runs on the live data feed. Fixtures, bounce times, lock countdowns and results arrive without admin input, including bye rounds with the correct number of matches. You set the scoring rules once and the season runs itself.
How do you handle bye rounds in the scoring?
Rounds come through with their real fixture count, so a seven-game round is scored over seven games. What you decide is whether rounds are weighted to even out for the lighter ones, and whether the margin fixture moves when the obvious match isn't on. Both are competition settings, not workarounds.
Can we run the finals as well as the home-and-away season?
Yes, and since 2026 that means five weeks and eleven matches rather than four weeks and nine. You can carry tipping straight through the finals, or close the tipping competition at Round 24 and run a four-team bracket once the preliminary finals are set.
What does it cost?
Free for up to 25 participants, no credit card. Starter is A$39 a month for 100 participants, Growth A$65 for 250, and Pro A$105 for 500, all in Australian dollars including GST. Most organisers move onto a paid plan when they want their own branding rather than because they ran out of room.
Can people tip from their phone without an app?
Yes. No app, no install. Send a link or print a QR code, and people sign up in their phone browser in under a minute. Reminders arrive by email 24 hours before the first lock of the round and again 75 minutes out.
